Gita and Ramani are two girls who find themselves caught between two worlds – the modern Singapore with more wealth, luxuries, and a pressure to gain approval from the whole world, and a fading past of wet markets, working on weekends, and tradition.
Whilst Ramani is comfortable straddling both worlds, Gita struggles much more with it.
This is a simplified set of notes – a gist, in effect – of the text, to help you to start reflecting as you study. Also, it’s free, so make the most of it.
My recommendation is for you to briefly read the story once through, then read through these notes. From there, read the story again, but slowly. Pace yourself and reflect:
- As a Singaporean student, which character can you relate more with?
- In what ways do you find yourself caught in a whirlpool of transition?
- Having learnt from both girls, think about how you live now, and how you should live next? What changes would you have to make?
If you have benefited from my efforts and want to send a little expression of thanks my way, you may do so via the donation form below.
Your gift helps me power through another set of notes.
Thank you, and have a great day!
(If you can’t afford it, it’s really not an issue. The notes will remain free to download. :D)

Hi, I haven’t time to start on a new text this year. If you’re in secondary 3, then you can look out for it next year. I’ll probably work on that once I’m done with How We Live Now and A Hundred Flowers
